Overview – what is Holistic Pulsing?

Holistic Pulsing is more than a body therapy…it is also a philosophy, a way of life. At the heart of it is a belief in wholeness – that we are more than the sum of our parts and that integration of those parts leads to a sense of completeness and connectedness. We rediscover this through a philosophy of acceptance, awareness and re-empowerment….and through the gentle rhythms and flow of Holistic Pulsing, as experienced by the “body-mind”.

Holistic Pulsing can be used in conjunction with any other therapy, or as an approach in its own right. It can be safely used with most people irrespective of age or state of health.

Origins

Holistic Pulsing was developed in New Zealand by Tovi Browning in the 1980’s. As a modality, it has been influenced by aspects of Reichian-style bodywork, bioenergetic techniques from Alexander Lowen and the principles of lengthening and expanding from Mathias Alexander. Trager R Psychophysical Integration, cranial osteopathy and naturopathy have also contributed to the emergence of Holistic Pulsing, as has Gestalt therapy. To these physical and psychotherapeutic techniques has been incorporated the energetic influence of New Zealand’s lush, green environment, with particular recognition of the water element, of which we are 80% comprised. Holistic Pulsing affects the rhythms, pulses and flow within our bodies in a positive, gentle and powerful way.

What to expect from your Session

You can expect an initial discussion with your practitioner to establish an intention for your session (or series of sessions) or to help you focus awareness on whatever aspects you wish to explore or address.  You will then lie fully clothed on a massage table (or be seated, if appropriate). Rhythmic rocking movement is applied to generate a wave-like motion through your body. People generally find that this feels comfortable, supportive and deeply relaxing. Gentle stretching, lengthening and opening techniques are also used.

The response to Holistic Pulsing varies with the individual. The sense of peace, support and love is often a catalyst for powerful self rediscovery and healing. Many people express surprise at the depth and impact of a Holistic Pulsing session – physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.
